Various modes of communication reflect distinct social and political dynamics. Mass media, distributed through centralized broadcast platforms and controlled by the leading individuals, typically uphold established narratives. Conversely, face-to-face interactions, dependent on physical closeness, frequently convey subversive nuances. The author’s examination centers on the spread of rumors through media and word-of-mouth in India during the last decade. It underscores the rise of subversive content, sometimes including conspiracy, emotional conviction based on prejudice in relation to mob lynching incidents aimed at suspected criminals. This subversion is credited to the interplay between oral rumors transitioning into print and vice versa. The present research paper explores the intricate socio-cultural terrain surrounding mob lynching occurrences within the Indian milieu. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, this study meticulously examines the pivotal roles played by rumor propagation, oral narratives, and diverse forms of representation in the perpetuation of mob violence. Utilizing a blend of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, this investigation meticulously scrutinizes the complex interplay of factors contributing to the origination and escalation of mob lynching incidents. It intricately dissects the rhetorical strategies employed in disseminating rumors and crafting oral narratives, shedding light on the underlying power movements and motivations that drive these narratives. Furthermore, this study explores how these incidents are portrayed in various mediums, including media coverage, social media discourse, and artistic expressions, and assesses their impact on public perception and policy responses.
