Urban planning and policy development predominantly focus on the major demographic segment, typically those aged 20–60. However, the growing aging population, highlighted by numerous statistical reports, necessitates tailored considerations, particularly regarding travel capabilities. Older adults often face challenges with vehicular travel, making walking a critical mode of transport. This study seeks to understand the determinants of walking and regional variations among the elderly. A systematic review of 18 papers identified 4 major topics and numerous determinants affecting elderly walking behavior. The study further explores the role of policymakers and urban planners in creating conducive walking environments that respect cultural and regional differences.
