This chapter focuses on the so-called “solidarity crimes” and analyzes the criminalization of solidarity toward migrants in the European Union. It addresses the role of the European Union in institutionalizing a narrow form of solidarity, centered on border control and the externalization of humanitarian responsibilities, while simultaneously targeting grassroots organizations supporting irregularized migrants. It spans from local solidarity networks to securitarian mechanisms deployed in the Mediterranean, including legal and administrative harassment of those engaged in rescue operations or everyday acts of care.
