Rupture of the patellar tendon is an uncommon but a serious injury that requires a fast diagnosis and surgical treatment. It usually affects young patients, through direct or indirect trauma to the knee. Athletes practicing sports that require jumps like volleyball and basketball are more at risk. Conditions such as patellar tendinopathy and some metabolic diseases can be risk factors. Diagnosis is based on history, clinical findings, and ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging. Surgical treatment depends on the time and location of the rupture. The two most common surgical procedures in case of acute rupture are patellar longitudinal drill holes and end-to-end sutures. Augmentation with autograft or allograft is mandatory in case of chronic rupture.
