Coalitions, representing fusion between two bones or more, may be complete or incomplete and either bony (synostosis), cartilaginous (synchondrosis), or fibrous (syndesmosis). It is estimated that the prevalence of tarsal coalition is 1–2% of the population and isolated carpal coalition is 0.08 to 0.13%. This entry will review the most common clinical features, the salient imaging characteristics, and the treatment options for the most commonly encountered coalitions in the upper and lower extremities.
