This chapter addresses problems stemming from disciplinary silos negatively impacting approaches to the significant social problem of alcoholism. A tension between two key discourses, the scientific approach, centered largely in genetics and neuroscience, and the spiritual approach of Alcoholics Anonymous exists in recovery research. This chapter discusses these two approaches in depth and identifies problems stemming from this tension that may negatively impact recovery. The chapter concludes by proposing a shift to a dialogic interplay of the different approaches to benefit those suffering from alcoholism.
