Dorothy Gott (née Newberry) (c. 1748–1812) was an ecstatic millenarian prophetess who self-published three books, The Midnight Cry, “Behold, the Bridegroom comes!” or, an order from God to get your lamps lighted, Otherwise you must go into Darkness, where there will be weeping, wailing, and gnashing of Teeth […] (1788), Christ the Standard of Truth set up, by the Light of the Morning Star, the Principle of Truth: And Satan, the son of Perdition, Revealed, by the Same Light. […] (c. 1798), and The Noon-Day Sun; A Revelation from Christ, to Dispel the Night of Apostacy, to Make an End of Sin, to Bring in Everlasting Righteousness, to Seal Up the Visions and Prophecies in Oblivion, to Anoint the Most Holy King of Every Motion. […] (1811). She was raised a Quaker, and her mother’s teachings about the importance of silence in communing with God were a formative tenet of her spirituality. After moving to London to work as a domestic servant, she married the non-Quaker Abraham Gott and was subsequently disowned by the Religious Society of Friends for exogamy. She emerged as a millenarian visionary prophetess after Gott’s death in 1785 and preached a realizing eschatology, which asserted that Christ’s Second Advent would be in the heart rather than in the person of the Messiah, and in keeping with the theology of Early Friends (Cho and Worrall 2010; Cho 2013).
