Introduction: Writing in the War Years
摘要
This introduction provides an overview of the issues and types of writing covered in the English Civil Wars, Commonwealth, and Protectorate section (1640–1660) of this encyclopedia. This period saw an exponential increase in women’s print and manuscript literary production, as war afforded women greater access to traditionally masculine preoccupations, including political activism, religious discourse, and literary writing. Women writers innovated within all those fields, bringing their lived theoretical intelligence to the task of imagining new ways of living with conflict.
