Isabella Twysden (née Saunder) (1605–1657), was the author of a series of journals, inscribed in the pages of four printed almanacs. Spanning the years from 1645 to 1651, they provide a vivid portrait of the way that one mid-seventeenth century gentlewoman experienced, responded to, and represented a period of significant political and religious upheaval. A combination of her own annotations, familial interventions, and printed text, Twysden’s journals were both intensely intertextual and deeply personal. They illuminate the polyvocal quality of early modern life writing and one woman’s efforts to chronicle her own, and her family’s, experiences of internecine conflict.
