Designerly Thinking
摘要
A rapid and extraordinary development has happened in ‘design thinking’, with its application and adoption spreading especially into management and business innovation but also into a very diverse range of other fields. This development has led to some severe criticisms of what was being presented as ‘design thinking’. This chapter outlines the origins and early use of the concept of design thinking and goes on to address the criticisms of the new design thinking. It then seeks some clarification by distinguishing between ‘DesignThinking 1’ (the original formulation of ‘design thinking’, focussed firmly within design practice) and ‘DesignThinking 2’ (the more recent and popular but perhaps transient formulation, focussed outside the normal design domain, notably in business). This latter formulation has come to dominate the other in popular understanding, and we may have to accept that, for clarification, ‘DesignThinking 1’ now has to be re-named as ‘designerly thinking’. It still remains as something particular to designers and grounded in the discipline of design.
