In the 1990s to 2010s, numerous chromosome-banding techniques based on FISH were developed for the human and murine genomes. Here, we provide an overview of FISH banding techniques that have been defined as “any type of FISH technique that offers the possibility of simultaneously characterizing multiple chromosomal subregions smaller than a chromosome arm” and are DNA-specific. FISH banding methods are used successfully in research and diagnostics.
