Radiation Protection and Regulations

The content of this chapter includes principles of radiation protection based on cardinal rules of time, distance, and shielding. NRC regulations on posting, labeling, and sign display are described. The ALARA principle is explained, and recommendations to adopt it are given. Requirements for monitoring radiation workers for radiation exposure, bioassay, and decommissioning the facility after closure are described. Conditions for reporting radiation events and accidents to the NRC or the Agreement State are spelled out. The procedure for receiving and opening radioactive packages is described. Record keeping of different operations under NRC regulations is mandatory, which are listed in a table. A brief section on European Regulations on Radiation Protection is provided.
