Spathoglottis plicata, commonly known as the Philippine Ground Orchid, is a widely cultivated species in Southeast Asia, valued for its vibrant blooms and adaptability. Despite being categorized as “Least Concern” by the IUCN, habitat destruction, overcollection, and climate change, it poses significant threats to its wild populations. This study focuses on the conservation of S. plicata through cryopreservation, particularly targeting its pollinia, to mitigate the challenges posed by unsynchronized flowering. Cryopreservation offers a promising solution to preserve genetic material, ensuring long-term viability for breeding and research. Given the limited studies on S. plicata cryopreservation, insights from related orchid species, such as Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium, guide protocol development. Establishing a standardized cryopreservation method for S. plicata pollinia could significantly contribute to species conservation, controlled breeding programs, and genetic resource preservation in the face of environmental uncertainties.
