Pollen Cryopreservation of Elaeis guineensis

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is the world’s leading oil crop and is vitally important for many tropical countries. The plants are monoecious and exhibit ontogenic separation of male and female inflorescences every other year, which adversely impacts fruit set due to a lack of pollination. Oil palm pollinations are performed mainly by weevils and wind. A large population of weevils attacks male inflorescences and eats pollen. Since it is a very economically important crop, it needs immediate attention for its conservation. The cryopreservation of pollen is a complementary conservation strategy for many crops. The oil palm is drought sensitive and monoecious, and cryopreservation can be used as a strategy to conserve nuclear genetic diversity and can be supplied regularly for pollination. In addition to the several potential applications outlined, the most important aspect is the cryopreservation of pollen for overcoming geographical, seasonal, and physiological barriers to performing pollination. The researchers found viable pollen grains of oil palm after 23 years of cryopreservation.
