We begin this chapter with a fundamental result of number theory, discovered by Pierre de Fermat that bears his name: Fermat’s little theorem. This theorem (in the form due to Euler) is also the mathematical heart of the widely-used RSA code that we describe at the end of the chapter. In the spotlight Public and Secret Research we present a brief history of the RSA code development. We’ll discuss briefly the advantages of public research, using the RSA code as a starting point.

摘要

We begin this chapter with a fundamental result of number theory, discovered by Pierre de Fermat that bears his name: Fermat’s little theorem. This theorem (in the form due to Euler) is also the mathematical heart of the widely-used RSA code that we describe at the end of the chapter. In the spotlight Public and Secret Research we present a brief history of the RSA code development. We’ll discuss briefly the advantages of public research, using the RSA code as a starting point.
