Methodology on Plasma-Activated Water-Assisted Extraction and Plasma Bubbling-Assisted Hydrodistillation

This chapter explores advanced plasma-based methodologies for essential oil extraction, focusing on plasma-activated water (PAW)-assisted extraction and plasma bubbling-assisted hydrodistillation. Plasma-activated water (PAW) is water treated with nonthermal plasma, resulting in the generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) such as hydrogen peroxide, nitrate, nitrite, and hydroxyl radicals. These reactive species play a pivotal role in enhancing the extraction efficiency by disrupting the cell walls of plant materials, thereby releasing essential oils and bioactive compounds effectively. PAW’s unique properties, including its nontoxic nature, oxidative potential, and microbial decontamination capabilities, make it a versatile and eco-friendly medium for essential oil extraction. The chapter delves into the preparation and characterization of PAW, including the plasma discharge systems used and the optimal parameters for achieving maximum reactivity. It also discusses the plasma bubbling process, wherein plasma-generated bubbles enhance the hydrodistillation process by creating microturbulence and improving mass transfer. A detailed account of materials, methods, and safety precautions is provided to ensure successful implementation. By utilizing these innovative techniques, this chapter highlights the potential of PAW and plasma bubbling to improve yield, reduce processing time, and maintain the bioactivity and quality of essential oils, contributing to sustainable and efficient extraction practices.
