Thermal inactivation point (TIP) of viruses serves as an important aspect in understanding the physicochemical properties of different viruses and the functioning of different components in a virus particle (Hahon and Kozikowski, J Bacteriol 81:609–613, 1961). Depending on the nature and topology of the virus, the thermal activation point will differ (Dijkstra et al, Practical plant virology: protocols and exercises, 1998). This protocol offers a simple and efficient methodology by lowering the temperature by 5 °C to test the thermal inactivation point of different plant viruses.
