Remote Sensing for Virus Detection

The worldwide demand for agricultural products exceeds the supply, and plant viral diseases result in productivity and economic losses to agriculture, necessitating accurate detection for effective control. Lab-based molecular testing provides reliable and accurate diagnostics, but these tests are expensive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive, especially at the field-scale with a large number of samples. The implementation of noncontact, highly efficient, and affordable methods for detecting and monitoring plant diseases and pests over vast areas could greatly facilitate plant protection. In this respect, different forms of remote sensing methods have been introduced for detecting and monitoring plant diseases and pests in many ways. The use of innovative technologies like “Remote sensing” holds promise in agricultural crop production including crop protection. It is a rapid, noninvasive, and efficient technique, which can acquire and analyze spectral properties of earth surfaces from various distances, ranging from satellites to ground-based platforms. This chapter provides an overview of the science behind the remote sensing, general material, and methodology involved and the various remote sensing systems available for monitoring plant viral diseases including RBG cameras, Multispectral imagery, Hyperspectral sensing, Chlorophyll fluorescence (Chl-Fl) and Infrared (IR) thermal sensors and SAR and Lidar systems. Finally, the current challenges and considerations for detecting plant viruses are discussed.
