Bacillus cereus is considered a foodborne hazard as it can cause emetic syndrome and diarrheal syndrome through the production of cereulide toxin (emetic toxin) and hemolysin (BL or HBL) and nonhemolytic toxin (NHE), respectively. These toxins are heat-resistant and may be present in prepared foods. Detection of B. cereus toxins is essential to classify this bacterium as virulent. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for detecting mRNA expression of HBL and NHE toxins is a fast and easy alternative. Here, we describe an RT-PCR protocol for the mRNA expression of HBL and NHE toxins. However, this protocol is general and can be extended to detect mRNA expression of other toxins and genes of interest.
