Assessment of Hydration Status by Using Anthropometric Measurement

Hydration is essential for physiological functions, particularly in athletes whose performance and well-being are influenced by fluid balance. Dehydration is associated with adverse effects like decreased endurance, heat illness, and slower reaction times. This paper explores the body’s water-regulating mechanisms, highlighting water’s role in cellular processes, temperature regulation, and structural integrity. Methods for assessing hydration, including body weight monitoring, urine analysis, and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), are reviewed. While BIA is quick and noninvasive, it has accuracy issues in fluid imbalance conditions. Body weight monitoring effectively tracks sudden changes during activity but is less accurate over time. Urine tests, though readily available, can be misleading when excessive fluid is consumed post-exercise. Accurate hydration assessment remains critical in clinical and athletic settings due to the impact of dehydration on health and performance.
