Cognitive deficits are present in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD), with memory being the second most commonly impaired domain. Declining cognition is an integral part of the disease progression, and cognitive impairments lead to difficulties with activities of daily living. The exploration of memory and its neural substrates may aid in the development of new interventions for PD patients. Memory classification includes short-term and long-term memory, with non-declarative memories related to unintentionally acquired mechanisms like skills or habits. There are also memory subcategories, such as visuospatial memory, which can be episodic and semantic. This chapter aims to assess these memory types in relation to PD patients and the neural regions of interest. The use of animal models is important in assessing the effects of possible treatments before they can be tested on humans.
