Grote Reber was the first person who knowingly built a radio telescope. With it, Reber pioneered the exploration of the sky at radio wavelengths, locating the first known discrete radio objects, Cygnus A and Cassiopeia A. He also was one of those who independently discovered solar radio emission during WWII, and in the 1950s and 1960s, he carried out pioneering very-low-frequency observations of the Southern sky from Tasmania (Kellermann 2005).
