James Ring was a British designer of astronomical instrumentation, especially for work in the infrared. He pioneered the development of thin-mirror telescopes, which culminated in the UK Infrared telescope (UKIRT) on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, the outstanding infrared telescope of its day. He created what became the Astrophysics Group in the Blackett Laboratory at Imperial College.
