The unforgettably trying times of the current pandemic and long-time self-quarantines at home without access to centralized laboratories revealed more than ever the importance of performing tests at the point-of-care and the necessity of their real-time connectivity. Given the rapid progress of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled point-of-care testing (POCT) devices and their widespread applications, a comprehensive and timely review is presented here. It begins with an introduction to the necessity and importance of POCT devices and in particular real-time connected ones through the IoT concept in the Healthcare 4.0, then highlights state-of-the-art IoT-enabled POCT devices, and concludes by delineating the challenges and opportunities ahead.
