The study of illuminated manuscripts reveals a substantial amount of complexity, not only because of the intricate chemistry but also due to other factors related to natural ageing processes, materials degradation processes, multiple recipes involving complex formulations of colourants, binders, and additives, and interventions over the years that introduce additional complexity to the analysis. The approach presented here aims to detangle the organic colour paints’ analysis while unveiling a complete picture of the materials. Combining a chemometric method with the microspectrofluorimetry output data has enabled molecular fluorescence signatures to identify the colourant present and pinpoint the recipe’s specificities.
