Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been established as an important diagnostic tool for hand and wrist disorders. Its major advantages include high spatial and contrast resolution, multiplanar imaging, and lack of ionizing radiation. MRI combined with arthrography provides additional information on intra-articular disorders such as ligamentous tears, articular cartilage degradation, and triangular fibrocartilage complex tears. In acute trauma, MRI has a complementary role to plain radiographs and computed tomography, whereas regarding bone marrow disorders, it is the method of choice. A proper technique on the patient’s positioning, coil selection, and sequence application is required to extract all the capabilities of MRI. Each MRI examination should be tailored to the specific clinical question. The increased prominence of artifacts in high-field scanner images necessitates their recognition and technical alleviation to avoid diagnostic errors.
