The aging process is known to induce profound changes on the human body, including the musculoskeletal system. Aging is associated with a decrease in bone density and strength, as well as a decline in skeletal muscle mass, contractility, and quality with gradual fat infiltration (Padilla Colón et al. 2018). In addition, aging leads to an overall increase and redistribution of fat deposits, favoring visceral over subcutaneous adiposity (JafariNasabian et al. 2017). These changes are driven by multiple factors (both genetic and environmental), overall contributing to a reduction in the capacity of the organism to cope with stressors with a progressive increase in inflammation: this phenomenon is termed “inflammaging” (Franceschi et al. 2000). However, bones and muscles should not be thought of as mere kinetic units. In fact, in recent years, it has become clear that the two are connected not only mechanically, but also metabolically, so that they can be regarded as endocrine organs crosstalking via the secretion of numerous myokines and osteokines (He et al. 2020). Therefore, it comes as no surprise that metabolic diseases of the musculoskeletal system are so common with aging, contributing significantly to disability, frailty, and mortality. This becomes even more important in light of the continuous and rapid increase in the share of elderly people in our societies.
