Imaging of the Shoulder Nuclear Medicine: Techniques and Applications

Bone scintigraphy is one of the most common investigations done using the technetium-99m-labeled diphosphonates and is one of the common imaging using radionuclide materials. Radionuclide bone imaging does not have very good specificity but better sensitivity, which can be used to diagnose various pathological conditions. This has the advantage that it can detect pathologies that cannot be detected by routine anatomical imaging. Abnormal activity in the form of increased activity can signify the area of interest, and reverse is the amount of the decreased uptake. One of the best examples is the microfractures that can be easily identified and detected in 24 h, which cannot be identified by any other modalities. So, the evaluation of the trauma to the musculoskeletal regions can be useful for identifying pathological conditions easier and earlier like plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, “shin splints,” and spondylolysis. The classical features of focal hyperperfusion, focal hyperemia, and increased bone uptake are classical to osteomyelitis. Bone scintigraphy can also evaluate conditions like Paget disease, avascular necrosis, and all those negative conditions in anatomical imaging.
