Respiratory infections are one of the leading causes of death in people over 65 years old (Kochanek et al. 2023). A plethora of physiological changes come with aging. Mostly, structural changes in the lungs decrease the ability to cope with infectious pathogens, thus leading to a higher rate of death. This trend has been highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic in the past few years, where elderly people underwent greater mortality and morbidity rates compared to youngsters (Goldstein and Lee 2020).
