Abscesses are common in the geriatric population relative to other age groups. The reason for this is the greater propensity for an immunocompromised state from other concomitant morbidities such as diabetes mellitus, as well as being on other medications such as steroids. The presence of these concomitant morbidities also renders any surgical management of these abscesses being considered high risk. As a result, there is a movement toward managing these abscesses with percutaneous drainage, which is almost always done under imaging guidance and often by an interventional radiologist. This chapter illustrates the role of an interventional radiologist in the management of abscesses, including the indications for the procedure, pitfalls in the techniques, potential complications, and follow-up.
