Tumors and Tumorlike Lesions

Tumors and tumorlike lesions around the shoulder girdle present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to the complex interplay of anatomy, varied tumor types, and their diverse radiographic appearances. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the current strategies for the detection, characterization, and staging of these lesions, integrating both traditional radiography and advanced imaging modalities. The evaluation of osseous tumors is systematically addressed, beginning with an analysis of the specific bone and its affected part. Key considerations include the pattern of bone destruction, the presence and type of periosteal reaction, and the nature of matrix mineralization. The chapter emphasizes the critical roles of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in providing detailed insights into the tumor’s anatomical extent, its relationship to adjacent structures, and its biological behavior. For soft tissue tumors, the chapter explores the complementary roles of radiography, ultrasound, CT, and MRI, outlining how each modality contributes to different stages of tumor evaluation, from initial detection to detailed characterization and preoperative planning. Surgical staging is discussed with a focus on both osseous and soft tissue tumors, utilizing established staging systems to inform treatment strategies and prognosis. The importance of biopsy is highlighted, particularly the need for meticulous technique to avoid diagnostic pitfalls and ensure optimal surgical planning. Additionally, the chapter underscores the significance of imaging follow-up in monitoring treatment response and detecting recurrences. The classification and imaging features of various tumor types, including bone-forming, cartilage-forming, fibrous, and lipomatous tumors, as well as tumorlike lesions, are discussed with an emphasis on the correlation between radiologic findings and pathological outcomes.
