Shoulder Arthroplasty and Implants

Shoulder arthroplasty is being done in increasing numbers globally, and hence radiologists are more likely to encounter imaging tests involving shoulder arthroplasty, either on purpose or by accident. To monitor these implants and rule out any potential complications, standard radiography is the first-line imaging modality before using ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging techniques (such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging or nuclear medicine). Three types of shoulder arthroplasty procedures are available: hemiarthroplasty (e.g., humeral hemiarthroplasty and humeral head replacement), total shoulder arthroplasty, and reverse shoulder arthroplasty. Each of these prostheses may cause issues, which are common to all varieties, namely infection, periprosthetic fractures, loosening of the humeral component, heterotopic ossification, implant failure, and nerve damage. After the implantation of a reverse shoulder arthroplasty, instability, scapular notching, and acromial fractures may be observed. A rotator cuff tear and glenoid component loosening are two unique side effects of total shoulder replacement. The only specific issue that has been identified with partial shoulder joint replacement is progressive wear of the natural glenoid. The radiologist must be familiar with the various types of shoulder prostheses and the radiological symptoms of associated problems to start quick and appropriate care.
