Infections involving the shoulder are uncommonly encountered but important clinical problems because of the serious morbidity that may result. Prognosis depends on several factors, with a favorable outcome being most often dependent on early diagnosis coupled with aggressive and appropriate treatment. Imaging is an important adjunctive technique to achieving the diagnosis of infection, as clinical signs and symptoms are often nonspecific. Imaging is also helpful in delineating the extent of involvement and associated complications, and guiding management of infections. In challenging cases, imaging-guided procedures such as joint aspiration and biopsy of bone or soft tissue structures have a pivotal role in diagnosis. This chapter aims to describe and illustrate the role of imaging and various imaging features of infections involving the shoulder.
