Abstract <p>Thrust bearings with antifriction material S-1-U are investigated under lubrication with mineral oil and with water in start-up–run-out mode. The tests confirmed the high running-in qualities of the S-1-U material and its reliable operation in thrust bearings lubricated with water under loads up to 30 MPa. It was found that under water lubrication friction pairs may experience frictional self-excited oscillations.</p>
