Abstract <p>Damage to the front half-axle of a tractor is investigated. Chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical tests permit identification of the damaged material as quenched and tempered 38KhM alloy steel. The hardness of the damaged material is higher than what is required; that increases its brittleness.</p>

Damage to the front half-axle of a tractor is investigated.
