Abstract

A method to retrieve cloud liquid water path (LWP) using the AMSR2 satellite microwave radiometer data over the Arctic sea ice is proposed. The method is based on the possibility to estimate both the atmospheric water vapor column (WVC) and its optical thickness ( \(\tau\) ) at a frequency of 89 GHz over the Arctic sea ice from the AMSR2 data without any additional measurements. Numerical calculations of  \(\tau\)  for the ERA5 reanalysis profiles of atmospheric parameters over the Arctic sea ice were used to develop the method. The calculation results allowed training a neural network algorithm for retrieving LWP using the values of WVC and  \(\tau\)  as input parameters. The results of the method application were compared with the ERA5 reanalysis data. The method was also validated using LWP measurement data from the MOSAiC expedition. The method has time limitations: its use is possible only during Arctic winter months (from November to April).
