Abstract— <p>The paper presents a method for determining the optimal number of control elements for flexible bimorph mirrors. It is based on the application of Maréchal’s criterion for quantifying residual phase aberrations. An analysis has revealed that conventional approaches, which are based on evaluating the effectiveness of Zernike polynomial approximations, do not produce accurate results for modal wavefront correctors.</p>
