Abstract <p>To assess the corrosion rate of pipelines, corrosion and potentiodynamic studies of the behavior of St3 steel in soil aqueous extracts were conducted and compared with those in a 0.5 M NaCl solution. In the saline solution, the corrosion rate of the steel was often lower than in the soil extracts, suggesting that organic substances in the studied soil samples do not act as inhibitors of underground corrosion of St3 steel. Some discrepancy was noted between the corrosion rates calculated from gravimetric tests and polarization measurements. A comparison of the corrosion rates of steel in soil aqueous extracts with those predicted by model representations indicates limited applicability of the considered models to real-world objects.</p>
