Heat Treatment of High-Strength Aircraft Steel

A high-strength medium-carbon silicon-containing steel grade used in the aerospace industry and mechanical engineering for the manufacture of heavy-duty critical components was investigated. The effect of heating temperature in the range of 900–1000°C within the austenitic region exerted on the austenite grain size has been studied. Dilatometric measurements have been carried out for a mode of continuous cooling from the austenitic region in the range of constant cooling rates amounting to 0.025–75°C/s and for a mode of isothermal holding in the bainitic region. Mechanical properties have been determined after the isothermal quenching in the bainitic temperature range and after quenching and tempering. It is shown that the steel under study exhibits a combination of high impact toughness and high strength after the isothermal quenching in the temperature range of the lower bainite formation.
