Features of Desulfurization of Iron Ore Raw Materials by Carbon Reduction

Depletion of deposits of ores “clean” in impurities leads to the need to involve iron ore raw materials with a high sulfur content in metallurgical circulation. The objective of the work is to study the kinetics of iron ore desulfurization during carbon reduction. As experimental studies have shown, desulfurization with gaseous CO occurs at an insignificant rate. Ore desulfurization under reducing conditions with solid fuel occurs an order of magnitude slower than under oxidizing conditions, which is due to the adsorption of sulfur by iron-based melts. The lowest iron content and minimum mass fraction of sulfur were found in the chemical composition of the slag “shell”. Thus, sulfur mainly passes into metal rather than gas. Sulfur ores must undergo desulfurization by oxidizing roasting before metallization with solid fuel. Deep desulfurization of iron ore raw materials during solid fuel reduction requires long-term isothermal holding, which negatively affects productivity.
