Abstract

The shaft metallization furnaces generate flows of technogenic components that can be utilized as secondary resources under certain conditions. The most significant type of solid waste emitted by shaft metallization furnaces is the flue gas cleaning sludges. The purification of the off-gases from the “Midrex” and “HYL” furnaces is carried out in scrubbers, and the cleaning products are represented by sludges. Data on the parameters of the sludges indicate that they contain iron in quantities sufficient for their use as iron ore raw material. The aim of this work is to identify the technological features of preparing flue gas cleaning sludges from shaft metallization furnaces for metallurgical processing. For the efficient use of flue gas cleaning sludges, it is necessary to organize their technological preparation to reduce moisture content and prevent freezing during the winter period. Dehydrating the sludges to a water mass fraction of 8% can be achieved by using thickeners and filter presses. When thickening the sludges, the use of coagulants is recommended, which significantly increases the productivity of the thickeners. Lime treatment of the sludges to achieve a moisture level of 6.0–6.5% (lime dosage of 4%) helps to eliminate their freezing under negative temperature conditions. The obtained data can be used to select the technology for sludge preparation and to develop design and technological solutions.
