Abstract <p>Preprints have received a new round of development due to the advent of electronic servers and the improvement of their functionality, as well as to the implementation of ideas for alternative models for publishing research results and their support from international foundations, sponsors, publishers, and scientific institutions. The increasing role of preprints in scientific communication is shown, features of the organization and use of preprint servers are identified, and the possibilities of their further implementation in the system of information support for scientists are considered.</p>
