Soil Cover Map of the Ola Sector of the Magadan Nature Reserve (Koni Peninsula)

The study object was the previously unexplored soil cover in the Ola Sector of the Magadan Nature Reserve. A route survey was conducted of twelve of the most characteristic tracts of the site available for hiking. A soil map has been compiled showing nine outlines of soil cover structures, among which the most widely represented are combinations of ochreous podburs with illuvial-ferruginous ochreous sod-podburs; dry-peat ochreous podzols with ochreous podzols; and mucky-peat dry-peat lithozems, as well as ochreous gleyic podzols. Eleven soil subtypes were identified within the site, the most common being soils of the Al-Fe-humus and humus–accumulative types, developed on granitoid derivatives overlain from by an aeolian cover of volcanic ash up to 0.25 m thick. The research methods generally accepted in Russian soil science were used. The topographic map of the Koni Peninsula at a scale of 1 : 100 000 was used as the basis for mapping, together with Landsat satellite images from the Bing Aerial module of the QGIS2.10.1 public-domain program. For the first time, an almost continuous distribution of ochreous soil subtypes has been identified in the soil cover of a large area of the northern Okhotsk mainland. Their genesis and classification and nomenclature position are associated with ancient Kamchatka volcanism that generated a thick cover of white rhyolitic ash cover. Through surface erosion and suffusion, the latter, penetrating the underlying soil horizons and bedrocks and overgrown with vegetation, produced a thick podzolic horizon, radically changing the current nature of soil formation. The results obtained can be applied in environmental protection to supplement information about the natural environment of one of the poorly studied areas in the protected natural territories of the Northern Far East, as well as in domestic soil science to clarify the genetic characteristics of the impact of Kamchatka volcanism on the soil cover of the vast coastal region of the Pacific Ocean.
