The Detailed Present-Day Facies Structure of the Kuril Basin and Western Pacific Ocean According to Univariate Regression and One-Factor Variance Analyses

Based on a comprehensive lithological and geochemical analysis of sediments from the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk and the northwestern Pacific Ocean, the lithofacies zoning of the region has been performed for the first time. Three facies zones are identified: the Kuril Basin, the Kuril–Kamchatka deep trench, and the Northwest Pacific Ocean, each of which is subdivided into two subzones with characteristic morphological and sedimentary features. The differences in the sources and composition of terrigenous and volcanic-terrigenous material, the degree of primary biological productivity, and the role of gravitational and hydrodynamic processes in the formation of marine sediments are established. One-factor variance analysis and mathematical statistics methods allowed us to identify stable geochemical indicators (Si/Al, Fe, Ti, and Th) that distinguish lithofacial zones. The Kuril Basin is the most productive in biogenic sedimentation and is most saturated with terrigenous material, whereas the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench is mostly affected by volcanism. The Northwest Pacific Ocean is characterized by a weak supply of sedimentary material and the predominance of pelagic and hemipelagic sediments. Our results confirm the significance of a geological and geochemical approach and methods of statistical analysis in facies zoning of the present-day marine basins.
