Comparative analysis of ebony wood from different genus (Diospyros and Ebenopsis) by computed microtomography

Ebony wood from the Diospyros genus is used for making musical instruments. However, some species are listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) because they are endangered species. Surprisingly, anatomical descriptions of Diospyros wood are quite scarce. Therefore, this work aims to generate 3D information on Diospyros crassiflora wood using computed tomography, and compare it with Ebenopsis ebano wood, which is not endangered as a possible substitute. Results show that Ebenopsis wood lacks the high quality of Diospyros wood. The main differences between both woods are a low density, low ultrasonic velocity and the high amount of crystals contained in the Ebenopsis wood. Despite this, similar anatomical features suggest that Ebenopsis wood would be a good substitute for Diospyros wood for manufacturing good-quality musical instruments. It is concluded that 3D analysis is useful to describe the wood anatomy.
