A sustainable solution for air pollution mitigation using zinc oxide nanoparticle-infused concrete

Concrete is extensively utilized in the construction of various structures. Globally, the annual consumption of concrete amounts to 30 billion tons. Unfortunately, pollution has emerged as one of the most significant challenges in the contemporary world. Air pollution poses a substantial threat not only to the environment but also to human health. It encompasses various hazardous pollutants such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen oxides, and ozone. Therefore, a sustainable solution is essential to address this issue. This research presents an innovative approach to studying pollutants present in the environment and enhancing the performance of concrete using zinc oxide as a partial replacement (weight percentage) of cement. Experimental studies were conducted by holding polluted air in a closed glass chamber. More than 90% of air pollutants were removed.
