Extraction of cellulose from agave mezcalero bagasse by acid hydrolysis

In 2022, COMERCAM reported the production of mezcal in 14,165,505 L; consequently, the generation of millions of tons of lignocellulosic waste. These wastes have been the center of attention mainly due to their abundance and excellent mechanical, chemical, and biologic properties. In this work, the acid hydrolysis method is presented for the extraction of crystalline cellulose from agave bagasse, where HCl was used to dissolve the amorphous phase; subsequently, it was subjected to an alkaline hydrolysis treatment with NaOH and bleached. The samples obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The XRD patterns indicate that the bleached samples are highly crystalline due to the efficient dissolution of the amorphous phases. FT-IR spectra confirmed these results. The morphology of the cellulose was evaluated by SEM, confirming that the bleaching treatment reached the dissolution of residual lignin and hemicellulose.
