Extraction and characterization of biofilms from the mesocarp of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus)

The increasing environmental impact of single-use plastics necessitates the exploration of sustainable alternatives. This study investigates the use of watermelon rind (Citrullus lanatus) as a raw material for producing bioplastic films. By utilizing the epicarp and mesocarp of watermelon, we developed bioplastic films and conducted a series of characterizations, including optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results reveal the potential of watermelon rind to produce biodegradable films, demonstrating thermal stability and structural characteristics that could position these bioplastics as viable substitutes for conventional plastics. This research not only offers a solution to plastic waste but also adds value to agro-industrial waste.
