Appraisal on local manufacturing of grinding plates used in food processing in Ghana: The use of local plant extract for surface optimization

The study aims to optimize the surface of locally made corn mill plates using a plant (Birsana) extract to inhibit corrosion and enhance toughness. Most locally made corn mill plates used in Ghana, with 95% cast iron, wear out three to four times faster than the durable but costly imported alternatives. Microstructural, chemical, hardness, and corrosion tests were conducted on treated and untreated samples, with imported plates serving as a control. Results indicated that the samples quenched in low concentration of the Birsana extract had the lowest corrosion rate, of 1.71
