摘要

Data is considered a key success factor for many companies, often with the strategic intention of generating a substantial “return on data” to support informed decision-making, increase sales, or power intelligent systems (Grupp 2022, p. 1). However, organizations frequently focus too heavily on IT tools, even though “the human plays a critical role in any data strategy” (Feng 2024, p. 21). Data Governance therefore integrates IT tools, people, and processes into a coordinated overall system (DataCamp 2025, Chap. 1, p. 3 ff.).

This paper examines how the Vaillant Group’s Data Governance initiative structures this interaction. Following a historical overview of the company and a conceptual clarification, five core pillars of Data Governance are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the areas of Data Ownership & Accountability and Data Quality. The domain-building approach illustrates how data objects can be assigned to clearly defined areas of responsibility. A comparison of three Data Governance operating models characterizes the Vaillant Group’s federated approach as “flexible and balanced,” as it links domain-specific decision-making with central standards. The role of the Data Governance Office as the central coordinating entity is highlighted.

Additionally, the paper outlines role models and the Data Community. The importance of data quality within the Data Governance framework is emphasized through the concepts of Get Clean, Stay Clean, and First Time Right. Finally, the key tools of the Data Governance strategy are presented: the Data Catalog, which enhances transparency, and the data quality tool, which ensures and improves operational data quality.
